To strike a balance between client’s priorities, choices and yet reflecting our design ideology was a challenge. There is a coexistence of traditional elements and contemporary materials. Adopting construction techniques and technological assistance to improve the building's efficiency and lower the maintenance of the house has helped to reduce the overall carbon footprint. Ensuring naturally lit and ventilated spaces with introvert planning as the site demands, to negate the congest exterior view.



CONTEXTUAL CONSIDERATION

Situated in a tight as well as a busy locality, the residential space demanded attention for privacy, noise control and natural lighting. The corner site was taken advantage of and the entrances of the commercial spaces and residence were made independent of each other, which overcame privacy issues from the commercial complex below.

The residence is intentionally placed from the second floor to avoid direct contact with the contextual narrow junction. Considering the deficiencies, the common spaces were planned introverted towards a light court.


SUSTAINABILITY

The construction was completely carried out using porotherm blocks (hollow clay blocks). Due to its thermal capacity, holds heats and keeps the environment cooler and comfortable. Adopting techniques to ensure natural light and ventilation and automation of the complete house for ease and control of electricity usage.

Centralised heat pumps for hot water along with solar water heater allows considerable amount of power saving. The combination of a reverse water pump with the heating system overcomes any wastage of water. This helps in long term sustainability and reduces the carbon footprint of the building.





DINING
Dining space, being the client’s priority, is enhanced with double height & a ledge seating to encourage interaction.



LIVING
Veined walnut wall panel along with distinct fabrics break the monotony and achieve balance to the space.

CONNECTED SPACES
Making the spaces transparent and visually larger by introducing punctured double heights, connected spaces and glass screens.

Glass blocks in the ceiling as skylights to keep the toilets naturally lit.

Foot & ceiling suspended lights to enhance the transit core.



KITCHEN
Composition of chic acrylic cabinets and conventional wooden window.



JAALI DETAIL
Acts as a screen to obstruct the view of the adjacent unkept terrace. Lights up the staircase core and common lobby with geometric patterns moving with the sun path.



SUSPENDED MEZZANINE
Bordered with glass to penetrate light to the lower space, acts as a library island with a wall size tree canopy view.



LAVATORY
Toilet with subtle shades to make the space look bigger Niches and wooden clerestory in parallel to the contemporary finishes

ENTRANCE



DEFINING THE SPACES



The light court, detailed with a double height jaali and three large skylights provides ample natural lighting through the day for the lobby and acts as a main feature creating gradually moving geometric light patterns at the entrance stairway. The suspended mezzanine floor in the light court between the two floors with a large wall size window overlooking a tree canopy creates an interesting family and library space with privacy.


Dining area being the family space according to client’s priority, has been designed as a punctured double height space that enhances vertical interaction as well. Circular openings carved to create a drama in the space and provide ambient natural light. A ledge seating and tv unit amidst dining provided to achieve the purpose of the space.



INTERIORS



The lifestyle of our clients demanded a clean and a functional space that required less maintenance. The finishing materials were carefully chosen to create a subtle style statement. Moon Creme Italian marble with mild veining adorn the flooring of most spaces. The spaces are brought together with dark walnut wall, ceiling finishes and furniture. Most walls are kept neutral and feature walls were further highlighted using wallpaper with a mild shimmer. Drapery and furnishing bring in the needed pop of colour and life to the space.


The interiors were given a lift using strategic light fittings. Spot and focus lights in natural white were introduced in corridors. The profile lights that run all along the false ceiling like a bordering highlight the white ceiling and form a delight by itself. Automation of the complete lighting system gave the advantage of creating different mood settings in every space which adds another dimension to the whole experience. Automation system installed for most electrical requirements like fans, lights, music and security systems makes the daily living easier and hassle free.


The toilets create a posh statement with a combination of William Grey marble containing deep veining and ochre highlights over the subtle moon creme Italian marble. The skylights provided with glass blocks on the slab keeps it bright and lit all day.
