The morning calls of a sparrow. The soft rustle of coconut leaves. The chirp of crickets in the bush. These are some of the sounds that can be heard in the farm plot where our proposed weekend home is located.
Away from the bustle of the city and designed as a serene escape into nature’s lap, the home is more an experience than architecture. With the clients looking for an open concept without compromising on privacy or security, the design is an evolution of forms and materials. Keeping in line with our ideology of the building being a response to its context, exploration ranges from stone walls & terracotta-tiled roofs to rammed earth & vault arches.
The layout invites light and air in while privacy is maintained through strategic landscaping. The rooms are spacious with massive openings that allow indirect sunlight to filter in through screens & canopies. As advocates of natural materials, rammed earth was an obvious choice for the load bearing 2-storied structure with the use of concrete being minimised to slabs. Another prominently incorporated material is bamboo, which is more than just an aesthetic element as it has considerable tensile strength. This is explored in the unique design of columns, where steel and bamboo keep the patio canopies aloft.
The centrepiece of the outdoor oasis is a private swimming pool, inviting inhabitants to unwind amidst the tranquillity of nature. The open-plan layout seamlessly transitions between living spaces, creating fluidity and cohesion throughout the interior. Whether entertaining guests in the expansive living area or enjoying a quiet moment of reflection in the cozy alcoves, every corner of the farmhouse exudes warmth and comfort.
